Habana Baila

HABANA BAILA

I had stepped off the plane with a raging fever. A week of dancing in a trance in Cuba, on assignment for an airline magazine. Havana and its streets—the entire island lived to the rhythm of dance. Rumba, flamenco, salsa, paso doble, and even classical ballet. A first setback with the National Ballet–I couldn’t get in–but then a scene of young Cuban ballet students flirting at a bus stop: the magic of an impromptu encounter.

Then, the appointments came in quick succession. The National Television Ballet; dance as an interlude–there are no commercials in Cuba. Finally, flamenco in an old, dilapidated theater–a vestige of the Spanish presence.

Beads of sweat heralding the 40-degree heat; I felt weightless. In the evenings, in a semicomatose state, I swayed my hips on the dance floors of the capital’s clubs to the sounds of the Buena Vista Social Club.

Dance was omnipresent, the only remedy for the hardships of an island on the brink of suffocation. After a week, an antibiotic injection put an end to my photographic trance.

HABANA BAILA
