Mode Avantgarde / Gunnar’s

I began my career in graphic design in Paris 1979, at the age of sixteen, working with the Danish photographer Gunnar Larsen. Our first project together was Mode Avantgarde magazine, soon followed by Gunnar International. In the early days, my tasks were wonderfully eclectic — I spent hours crafting Letraset titles by hand, fetching coffees from Bernard’s across the street on Rue de la Cossonnerie, and delivering what was proudly (and truthfully) called the world’s biggest — and heaviest — fashion magazine across Paris.

Over time, I took on more creative responsibilities and eventually became Art Director of the magazines alongside Gunnar. I worked on the Dutch editions and helped organize the many fashion shows we produced around Europe — a thrilling, high-energy world filled with photography, print, and style. I stayed with Gunnar until 1983–84, when I moved to London to continue my journey in design.

J’ai commencé ma carrière de graphiste à Paris en 1979, à l’âge de seize ans, aux côtés du photographe danois Gunnar Larsen. Notre première collaboration fut le magazine Mode Avantgarde, rapidement suivi de Gunnar International. À mes débuts, mes tâches étaient aussi variées que formatrices : je passais des heures à composer des titres en Letraset, à courir chercher des cafés chez Bernard, juste en face, rue de la Cossonnerie, et à livrer dans tout Paris ce qui était sans doute le plus grand — et le plus lourd — magazine de mode du monde.

Avec le temps, j’ai pris davantage de responsabilités créatives et suis devenu directeur artistique des magazines aux côtés de Gunnar. J’ai travaillé sur les éditions néerlandaises et participé à l’organisation des nombreux défilés de mode que nous produisions à travers l’Europe — un univers exaltant, rythmé par la photographie, l’imprimé et le style. J’ai poursuivi cette aventure jusqu’en 1983-84, avant de partir à Londres pour continuer mon parcours dans le design.
