What is true for written music is also very true for improvisation. There’s ‘substance’ there and with it, movement of this substance upon itself. There’s this music which, at the very moment we play it, when we’re creating it with Matthieu, seems to pre-exist in our imagination. This common source is the wellspring for our intention, our firm wish to transcribe this later, together, by evoking some real open spaces with allusions to the weather, the elements, the emotions.
There’s this choice of acoustic instrumentation first, then that of a direct recording to follow, then Samuel Choisy’s photo (Cabin Fever #8) which also describes this movement of the substance upon itself. There’s the source – fluid, organic – that puts us in a space where music can be expressed without any prior judgement, at a tempo where emotions depend on the improvised forms holding the composition together or place themselves alongside it.
There’s the desire to realise our twenty-year long (or more) artistic collaboration in concrete terms by creating and recording an acoustic duo.
There’s a return to ‘grass roots’, and there’s friendship.
