Photographer Anne Lass and Sound Artist Jón Hallur Stefánsson asked me to find a way to show their project « The Unknown », and I suggested to make an outdoor exhibition on the main square of our little town Østermarie, situated on the beautiful Baltique island Bornholm. I designed the exihibition structures, the panels, the catalog and the poster for this event.

“The Unknown” is an artistic project created by photographer Anne Lass and audio documentarian Jón Hallur Stefánsson in collaboration with the Østermarie Local Archive. The selected portraits are taken from the folder “Unknown Persons” in Østermarie’s local archive. These photographs are part of a collection of unidentified individuals whose identities remain a mystery. By listening to the recordings associated with the portraits, one can hear the local residents of Østermarie share their thoughts and speculations about who these people might have been.
Where might they have lived in Østermarie? What did they do in their free time? Did they have any secrets?
The photographs invite reflection on a bygone era while also sparking the imagination. With this project, Anne Lass and Jón Hallur have attempted to create an artistic bridge between the past and the present. The installation “The Unknown” will be exhibited at Østermarie Square in the summer of 2024. Additionally, during Culture Week in September 2024, Anne Lass and Jón Hallur will create an audio walk through Østermarie’s center, allowing the past to haunt and providing insight into the town’s stories.
