Island

Along the trails-designed and shaped, birdsong and rustling of the wind fill the air. Beneath the canopy of leaves, one feels both the tropical humidity and the richness of life in all its diversity. The trail opens onto the coast, and suddenly the exuberance of life sheltered by mahogany trees, palms, mango trees, and papayas gives way to vastness: calm, steady, and bathed in light. Island life carries this paradox. Everything is either close, here, within sight, or far away, beyond the stretches of the sea.

Moyenne Island in the Seychelles is one of those small lands of contrasts. Brendon Grimshaw made it both a home and a sanctuary, through work imbued with purpose: planting trees, fostering endemic species, welcoming birds, protecting turtles. To integrate oneself into a biotope, to work toward its development, and to receive its benefits in return.

It is from these harmonious opposites, from this determination to be virtuous, that the repertoire of Island is born. It tells the story of Moyenne Island and of Grimshaw’s solitary life—the hard labor, and the beauties of the sky, the trees, and the sea. But above all, it is a story of commitment: of a resistance in the form of renunciation, of all the small victories, and of the accomplishment that comes from having, on this small island, restored through care, the natural order of things.

Island

Sur les sentiers, dessinés, façonnés, s’entendent les chants d’oiseaux, les bruissements du vent. Sous le toit de feuillages se ressentent aussi bien la moiteur que la vie, diverse. Le sentier débouche sur la côte, et soudain l’exubérance de la vie qu’abritent acajous, palmiers, manguiers et papayers laisse place à l’immensité, calme, régulière, baignée de lumière.

La vie insulaire porte ce paradoxe. Tout est soit proche, ici, à portée de regard, soit loin, par delà les étendues marines. L’île Moyenne des Seychelles est une de ces petites terres de contrastes. Brendon Grimshaw en a fait un lieu de vie mais aussi un sanctuaire, à force d’un travail empreint de sens. Planter des arbres, favoriser la vie des espèces endémiques, accueillir les oiseaux, protéger les tortues. S’intégrer dans un biotope, œuvrer pour son développement, recevoir ses bienfaits en retour.

C’est de ces contraires harmonieux comme de cette détermination à être vertueux que naît le répertoire d’Island. Il raconte l’île Moyenne et la vie solitaire de Grimshaw, le dur labeur et les beautés du ciel, des arbres ou de la mer. Mais c’est bien de l’engagement dont il est question, d’une résistance en forme de renoncement, de toutes les petites victoires et de l’accomplissement que représente le fait d’avoir su, sur cette petite île, rétablir par le soin l’ordre des choses.
